The first issue of The Glenmary Challenge was actually published in 1938, one year prior to the founding of the society. According to Christopher Kauffman, The Challenge was "an instrument for winning vocations, for raising rural mission consciousness, and for broadcasting the need for friends and funds." The front cover of the first Challenge Magazine included a copy of Fr. Bishop's infamous map showing the great challenge - the vast area he called "No Priest Land."
