The summer of 1939 included Fr. Bishop's first foray into street preaching in the mission areas of Southern Ohio. On these early "open-air campaigns" he was joined by Fr. Raphael Sourd. According to Herman Santen who wrote the biography Father Bishop, Founder of the Glenmary Home Missioners; "They were equipped with a portable altar, a loud-speaker, a projector and screen for out-door pictures. With St Mary's Church at Manchester as a base, each night they preached in neighboring villages and towns."
