Rev. George Mathis was laid to rest today in a coffin he designed and built by himself. I just think that is too cool! George made the coffin with his own hands and kept in the most prominent room in his house to constantly remind him that we are just passing through this life on earth. Many words about his life and theology were shared last night at the wake service and at his funeral today. From his flying kites on his rooftop to designing mission churches, George had an exciting and diverse life in the missions. One Glenmarian shared his understanding of George's essence by saying "George could read my heart like I can read a book."
Fr. George was a Glenmary priest and missioner for over 60 years! George was well loved by his own family and his Glenmary family. He'll be missed but we believe he'll be waiting in heaven for us with a scotch in hand while leading a Mediterranean line dance.
