Glenmary Brothers, Br. Jack Henn, Br Levis Kuwa, Br. Jason Muhlenkamp and I attended the National Symposium on the Life of the Religious Brother, at the University of Notre Dame on March 25, 2017. The program, was based on the Vatican document on the "Identity and Mission of the Religious Brother in Church."
The keynote address for the Symposium was delivered by Br. John Mark Falkenhain, OSB, who is a professor of psychology at St. Meinrad's Seminary. He highlighted how being "just a brother" is how we are called to be an uncomplicated witness to Christ. He illustrated the values in the Evangelical Counsel to our brother call and reminded us that the brothers vocation is a "singular vocation dedicated to solely the charism of our community... Brothers are special conductors of the community's charism."
In addition, Cardinal Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, shared an afternoon reflection and was the homilist and main celebrant at the closing liturgy. Cardinal Tobin reminded us that we need to "Continue to live our vocation in a perceptible way, and others will come."
